There are several different types of hosiery; hold-ups, stockings, tights, and socks. Hosiery is tight-fitting clothing worn on the feet and the legs. Most hosiery is made by knitting and sewing methods. Modern day hosiery can be made with stretchy fabrics and different types of meshes.

Hold-ups (or stay-ups) are a type of stocking with silicone and elastic sewn at the top, this makes certain that the stockings stay in place while worn.

In the past throughout the 40's and 50's bobby socks were the thing of fashion. Bobby socks are ankle-length frilly and were often worn with a school uniform.

The most popular type of hosiery is the stocking. The stocking is a very close fitting elastic garment, that covers the foot and lower part of the leg, but is not usually intended to hide the entire leg. The stocking used to be made out of a woven type of cloth but is now made with knitted wool, silk, cotton, and nylon. Half-Stockings cover the foot and part of the calf only, these are what we now know as socks.

Stocking typically is reffering to a form of women's hosiery that is configured as two pieces, one for each leg. Stockings, are a type of hold-ups meaning they are meant to be able to hold up on their own. Thigh highs are also perceived as preferable to pantyhose, for aesthetic reasons, they are easier to access the genital area, health and cleanliness, and finally it is easier to use the bathroom.

Stockings are usually supported by a garter belt, stay-up (hold-up) technology, or a circular elastic garter, which is the least popular of all the other methods.
