Moulin Rouge! brought corsets back into mainstream media featuring many corsets in the film. In the 1920's the corset fell from fashion in Europe and America, it was replaced by girdles and bras. It survived mainly as a costume.
Brief revivals of the corset were seen in the late 40's and early 50's in the form of waist cincher's. This would give women the hourglass figure, that was deemed appropriate for women to have. Since the late 80's the corset experience periodic revivals, generally portraying the corset as outwear rather than underwear.
In the past women wore the corset over garments like chemise's or shifts. It absorbed perspiration and kept the corset and the gown clean. Modern times an undershirt or corset liner is generally worn.
The corsets we see today are not typically what the first corsets looked or felt like. In the past corsets actually flattened the bust and gave women a hard stanoffish appearance, rather than modern times where the bust is the main focus of the corset. Sexy corsets with models are popular among websites.
