Bra's often called brassiere's are a piece of clothing that covers,
supports, and helps to elevate the breasts. A bra is considered
underwear, in the nineteenth century the bra replaced the corset.
The bra can be worn for restraint during exercise, a sports bra is
generally used for exercise.
Many medical reports have suggested
that wearing a bra will help to promote ligament atrophy. Ligament
atrophy is what causes sagging in the breasts.
Some believe that there is no practical need for the bra, and a lot of
women go without a bra on a regular basis. Mainly in Europe the bra
is not used very often.
A short history of the bra: During the Minoan civilation era, females
depicted bra's, or bikini-like garments. During the 16th century and
onwards, rich people were dominated by the corset. Corsets push
breasts upward. By the 20th century, bras have replaced corsets, bra
manufacturers and sales have become a multi billion dollar industry.
In 1905 Herminie Cadolle developed the a garment that "held under
the neck" or a throat support. Brassiere's seem to have to come into
the English language as early as 1893. Vogue magazine first used the
word bra in 1907, and in 1911 the word was in an english dictionary.
Bras are used to help women achieve a more youthful appearance, by raising the breasts from what would be their natural position. Modern bras are much more decorative, than that of older periods of time, bras are now more of a fashion statement than they used to be. Rather than being functional, other bras such as open cup or open tip bras are more for a seductive appearance.
